Marine Sediments: Archives of the Past and Keys to Ocean Recovery

Marine sediments may appear still and unremarkable, yet they serve as one of the most valuable natural records of Earth’s history. Much like tree rings, layers of sediment preserve evidence of past environmental changes, including sea-level fluctuations and climate variability over thousands to millions of years.

At the same time, marine sediments act as major sinks for pollutants. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium—originating from industrial activities and mining—can accumulate and remain stored within these layers for long periods.

However, changes in environmental conditions, such as shifts in pH or salinity, can trigger the release of these trapped substances back into the water column. This process can degrade water quality and pose significant risks to marine ecosystems.

Understanding and managing marine sediments is therefore essential for effective ocean restoration. These hidden layers beneath the seafloor hold critical insights that can guide sustainable management and help protect marine environments for the future.

Sandbars: Nature’s Silent Shield Against Coastal Change

Sandbars are more than simple accumulations of sand; they are dynamic natural formations that play a critical role in protecting coastal environments. Acting as the first line of defense, sandbars such as the Sathing Phra Peninsula and Laem Tachi help absorb wave energy and reduce the impacts of monsoons, safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems like lagoons and bays located behind them.

Beyond their protective function, sandbars also serve as valuable geological archives. Layers of sediment and fossil remains preserved within these formations record past sea-level changes and environmental conditions over thousands of years.

However, these natural barriers are increasingly at risk. Unsustainable coastal development and construction, often lacking proper geological understanding, can accelerate erosion and disrupt the delicate balance of these systems.

Coral Reef Ecosystems: The Living Foundation of Ocean Life

Coral reefs are not rocks or plants, but living structures built by tiny animals that form one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Often called the “rainforests of the sea,” coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean, yet support more than 25% of all marine species. They serve as essential habitats, nurseries for juvenile organisms, sources of food, and natural barriers that protect coastlines from waves and storms.

However, these vital ecosystems are increasingly threatened by coral bleaching, a phenomenon driven by rising sea temperatures. Even a temperature increase of just 1–2°C can cause corals to become stressed and expel their symbiotic algae, losing both their color and primary source of energy.

Protecting coral reefs requires collective action. Simple steps—such as reducing energy consumption, choosing reef-safe sunscreen, minimizing single-use plastics, and practicing responsible tourism—can help preserve these ecosystems. Safeguarding coral reefs means protecting marine biodiversity and ensuring the resilience of coastal communities for future generations.

Blue Carbon Ecosystems: Hidden Power of Coastal Environments

Did you know that one of the most powerful solutions to the accelerating climate crisis may lie within coastal ecosystems we have long overlooked? “Blue Carbon” refers to the carbon captured and stored by coastal habitats such as mangroves and seagrass beds, which can sequester carbon at rates 5–10 times higher than terrestrial forests of the same area.

Beneath their roots lies a highly efficient natural carbon storage system, where greenhouse gases are not only absorbed by plants but also buried deep within sediments for hundreds to thousands of years.

However, these vital ecosystems—often described as the “lungs of the ocean”—are increasingly under threat. Their degradation does not only mean the loss of biodiversity, but also the release of vast amounts of stored carbon back into the atmosphere, further intensifying climate change.

Protecting and restoring Blue Carbon ecosystems is therefore not only a scientific priority, but a shared responsibility. It represents one of the most effective nature-based solutions to ensure a more balanced and sustainable future for generations to come.

During his visit, researchers and research assistants from COCC, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siriporn Pradit and Asst. Prof. Dr. Prakrit Noppradit, welcomed Prof. Lu and accompanied him on field visits to significant natural and cultural sites in southern Thailand.

On 6 September 2025, the delegation visited Thale Noi Wetland in Phatthalung Province to observe its ecological characteristics, biodiversity, and local livelihoods, including traditional fisheries and rice cultivation within the lake system—demonstrating the close relationship between community and environment.

On 8 September 2025, the group explored Khao Kho Hong Viewpoint in Songkhla Province, followed by visits to the Ban Hua Khao Daeng Mangrove Learning Center to study coastal resource conservation practices, and the Thaksin Folklore Museum to gain insights into the cultural heritage and history of southern Thailand.

The visit strengthened academic exchange between institutions and reinforced the research center’s commitment to integrating scientific research, environmental stewardship, and cultural understanding in advancing sustainable coastal development.

During the symposium, researchers from COCC delivered special lectures on key environmental issues.

Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) hosted a special lecture by Dr. Taavi Liblik, Head of the Department of Marine Physics at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia. The lecture featured two engaging topics: “Marine Research at Tallinn University of Technology” and “What Happens in the Subsurface of the Eastern Baltic Sea?”

During the session, Dr. Liblik presented an overview of advanced marine research initiatives at Tallinn University of Technology, highlighting innovations in ocean observation systems, physical oceanography, and climate-related marine studies. He also shared in-depth scientific insights into subsurface processes in the Eastern Baltic Sea, including water column stratification, circulation dynamics, and their implications for marine ecosystems and regional climate variability.

The lecture provided a valuable opportunity for researchers, faculty members, and students to broaden their understanding of marine physics and to exchange perspectives on oceanographic challenges in different geographic regions. The event also strengthened academic connections and opened pathways for future international research collaboration.

Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sutinee Sinutok and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen—together with the International Affairs and Corporate Communication Center, organized the activity “Marine Debris vs. Debris Sea” on August 9, 2025 at Samila Beach, Songkhla Province.

The activity formed part of the Thai–Chinese Youth Exchange Program: “Rooted in Heritage, Building a Sustainable Thai–Chinese Community of the Future.” The initiative aimed to strengthen environmental awareness, cross-cultural learning, and youth engagement in sustainable development.

Researchers, students, and staff collaboratively collected marine debris along the beach, followed by waste sorting and basic valuation assessment. Participants then presented creative ideas for recycling and upcycling collected materials, transforming marine waste into potential new resources while highlighting the environmental and economic impacts of plastic pollution.

The event provided hands-on learning experience in marine conservation and circular economy principles, reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility in addressing ocean pollution. It also strengthened international collaboration and youth leadership in building a more sustainable future for marine and coastal ecosystems.

Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) participated in the exhibition “Exploring the Geology of the Thai Peninsula”, held from 30 July to 4 August 2025 at Hatyai Hall, 5th Floor, Central Hatyai, Songkhla Province.

Under the theme “Coastal Ecosystems: Nature’s Defense in a Changing Climate,” the Center presented accessible and engaging information on coral reef ecosystems, blue carbon research, and marine debris issues. The exhibition highlighted the vital role of coastal ecosystems—such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds—in supporting biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and mitigating climate change through natural carbon storage.

Visitors explored research findings, educational displays, and interactive activities designed to raise awareness of southern Thailand’s rich natural diversity. Through hands-on learning experiences and science communication activities, the exhibition aimed to inspire public understanding of marine conservation and encourage responsible environmental stewardship.

The Center’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to bridging scientific research with society, promoting awareness of coastal resilience, and supporting sustainable development in Thailand’s marine and coastal regions.

Students from COCC win academic awards at the 8th Marine Science Conference 🏆🌟
Students from our research center were awarded academic presentation prizes at the 8th Marine Science Conference, held from June 25–27, 2025 at Rua Rasada Hotel, Trang Province. The details of the awards are as follows:
  • 1) Mr. Muhammad Safie bin Shukri received the “Outstanding Presentation Award” in the Oral Presentation category (Student Level). His presentation, entitled “Development of a molecular approach for identifying the coral Pocillopora using ATP6 gene sequencing and High Resolution Melting”, conducted by Muhammad Safie bin Shukri, Mathinee Yucharoen, and Aekkaraj Nualla-ong. This research highlighted the application of molecular biology techniques to improve the accuracy of coral species identification—an essential tool for biodiversity research and coral reef conservation.
  • 2) Miss Jor. Pongsapatchanok Chanok was awarded the “Honourable Mention” in the Poster Presentation category (Student Level) for her work titled “Detection of Heavy Metals in Water and Water Primrose at Thale Noi”, conducted by Jor. Pongsapatchanok Chanok, Korawich Keereerak, Prakrit Noppradit, and Siriporn Pradit. This study focused on environmental quality assessment of the Thale Noi area, an ecologically and socioeconomically significant wetland in southern Thailand.
These achievements reflect the strong research potential of student and the research center’s commitment to providing academic mentorship that fosters scientific skills, critical thinking, and communication—crucial qualities for the development of future researchers.

Researchers and students from the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) participated in the 8th Marine Science Conference, held under the theme “Science, Technology, and Innovation for a Changing Sea” from 25–27 June 2025 at Rua Rasada Hotel, Trang Province.

The conference brought together researchers, academics, and students from institutions across Thailand to exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration in marine science and environmental research. The event served as an important platform for sharing scientific findings that support sustainable ocean management amid increasing environmental change.

COCC presented a total of 11 academic contributions, including 5 oral presentations and 6 poster presentations. The research topics covered coastal ecosystem dynamics, the impacts of climate change on marine environments, and approaches to sustainable marine resource management. These studies reflect the Center’s ongoing commitment to generating scientific knowledge that supports evidence-based policy and conservation efforts.

COCC collaborated with coastal agencies and community unite for “Marine Debris Cleanup” during Thailand Ocean Week 2025

On 11 June 2025, the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC), in collaboration with the Marine and Coastal Resources Office 5 (Department of Marine and Coastal Resources), the Khao Pra–Laem Kham Non-Hunting Area, the Volunteer Network for National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (Pak Bang Sakom community), and teachers and students from Ban Pak Bang Sakom School, organized a participatory marine debris cleanup activity in celebration of Thailand Ocean Week (8–13 June 2025).

The activity took place around Koh Kham and Khao Lon Beach in Sakom, Thepha, Songkhla. Participants worked together to collect and categorize accumulated marine debris found within coastal ecosystems. The majority of waste consisted of plastic and foam materials—accounting for more than 50% of the total—particularly plastic bottles and caps, glass bottles, foam fragments, and discarded fishing gear such as ropes, nets, and buoys.

The initiative reflects a strong partnership between government agencies, local communities, and youth in fostering environmental awareness and collective responsibility for sustainable marine and coastal conservation.

Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) organized a training workshop titled “Monitoring Coral Spawning of Scleractinian Corals Using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)” on 17–18 April 2025 at Koh Maew, Songkhla Province. The activity was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacity of early-career marine scientists in applying ROV technology for marine ecosystem surveys. Participants engaged in hands-on field practice, deploying ROV systems to observe and record coral gamete release—an important indicator of reef health and environmental conditions.

The initiative promoted technological application in marine research while fostering inter-agency collaboration to support coral reef conservation and sustainable coastal management.

Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) participated in the 2nd Phatthalung Fossil Festival, held from 4–6 April 2025 at the 500 Million Years Fossil Building, Makok Nuea, Khuan Khanun, Phatthalung.

Under the theme “Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change,” COCC presented key research on blue carbon ecosystems, emphasizing the role of mangroves, seagrass, and coastal wetlands in carbon sequestration and climate mitigation. The exhibition also featured studies on the ecological significance of Thale Noi and research on the geomorphological evolution of the Sathing Phra sand spit, highlighting their importance for coastal management and climate adaptation.

In addition, JAK Reward Technology joined the event to introduce innovative waste management solutions, demonstrating how technology can support sustainable environmental practices.

The Center’s participation aimed to strengthen public awareness of coastal science, climate change, and sustainable development in southern Thailand.

On 8 January 2025, the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) organized a workshop entitled “Drone Training for Blue Carbon Workshop”, with the participation of students, researchers, and professors.

The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in the use of drone technology for supporting Blue Carbon research, particularly in coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass meadows, and other carbon-sequestering habitats. From 13–16 November 2024, COCC researchers conducted a field survey and monitoring of seagrass conditions at Ao Tang Khen and Pa Khlok Beach in Phuket Province, applying the Line Transect method to assess species composition and overall seagrass bed condition.

At Ao Tang Khen, a total of 6 seagrass species were recorded, including Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serrulata, Enhalus acoroides, Halodule uninervis, Halodule pinifolia, and Halophila ovalis. Among these, Cymodocea rotundata and Cymodocea serrulata were identified as the dominant species, indicating relatively healthy and well-established seagrass beds in the area.

In contrast, the seagrass beds at Pa Khlok Beach were found to be in a significantly degraded condition, with observations showing only incomplete seagrass leaves remaining. 4 seagrass species were identified at this site: Enhalus acoroides, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, and Thalassia hemprichii. The degraded state of the seagrass beds suggests potential pressures from environmental and human-related factors, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and effective management measures.

The findings from this survey provide essential baseline data for understanding seagrass ecosystem health in Phuket Province and support future conservation planning, restoration efforts, and sustainable coastal resource management.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen, together with Ms. Sopita Manarungraung and Ms. Natthayada Thuawasat, researchers and master’s students of the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC), served as speakers in a training session for volunteers from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation in the Thepha community.

The training aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of coral reef ecosystems, their ecological importance, and approaches to sustainable utilization and conservation. The speakers provided both theoretical knowledge and practical insights, emphasizing the role of local communities and volunteers in protecting marine resources and promoting long-term ecosystem resilience.

This activity reflects the Center’s commitment to community engagement, capacity building, and the transfer of scientific knowledge to support effective marine conservation and sustainable resource management at the local level.

Internship students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) presented their research outcomes and activities conducted during their 2-month internship at the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC).

The presentation session provided an opportunity for students to showcase their learning experiences, including involvement in coastal and marine research, field data collection and analysis, as well as participation in academic and research-supporting activities of the Center. Faculty members and researchers attended the session and offered constructive academic feedback.

In addition, the students shared reflections on their internship experiences, challenges encountered, and insights gained throughout the program. These exchanges contributed to the improvement of the internship framework and strengthened academic collaboration between institutions.

This activity represents an important step in fostering international academic cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia, aiming to enhance student capacity in environmental sciences, coastal oceanography, and climate change studies, while promoting sustainable knowledge exchange at the regional level.

Our researcher, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ponlachart Chotikarn, together with Mr. Pathompong Pramneechote, and Ms. Natthida Thammakirati, participated in the Research Utilization Exhibition at the Thailand Research Expo 2024, held from 26–30 August 2024 at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre, CentralWorld, Bangkok.

The research presented, entitled “Blue Carbon Potential of Natural and Planted Mangrove and Seagrass in the Andaman Sea” was recognized by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) as a study with high potential for further development and practical application. The findings contribute significantly to the understanding of Blue Carbon ecosystems and their role in climate change mitigation and sustainable coastal management.

On this occasion, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ponlachart Chotikarn was also invited as a speaker in the session “Sharing research experiences in blue carbon among researchers funded by the National Research Council of Thailand”, as part of the seminar “BLUE CARBON: Directions of Marine Research in Thailand”. 

Blue Carbon research plays a crucial role in marine resource conservation and climate change mitigation. The outcomes of this research are expected to support the development of policies and management measures aimed at promoting sustainable marine and coastal resource management and enhancing national responses to climate change.

Seagrass under heat stress

อากาศร้อนๆแบบนี้ อดคิดไม่ได้ว่าสิ่งมีชีวิตในทะเลจะเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง วันนี้ชวนอ่านสรุปผลงานวิจัยของ #COCC ที่ศึกษาผลกระทบของอุณหภูมิสูงต่อหญ้าทะเล

  1. การสังเคราะห์ด้วยแสง ซึ่งเป็นกระบวนการสร้างอาหารของหญ้าทะเลมีประสิทธิภาพลดลง หรืออาจจะถูกยับยั้งไปเลยเมื่ออุณหภูมิเพิ่มสูงขึ้นสุดขั้ว [1,2,3,4,5,6]
  2. การหายใจระดับเซลล์จะเพิ่มสูงขึ้น ซึ่งการหายใจระดับเซลล์เป็นกระบวนการที่สลายคาร์บอนที่พืชสร้างได้จากการสังเคราะห์ด้วยแสง [1]
  3. จากข้อ 1 และ ข้อ 2 ทำให้หญ้าทะเลมีคาร์บอนสะสมซึ่งเป็นแหล่งพลังงานลดต่ำลง และถ้าสถานการณ์ไม่ดีขึ้น หรือเจอปัจจัยรบกวนอื่นซ้ำเติม ก็อาจจะยิ่งลดต่ำลงไปเรื่อยๆ
  4. เมื่อการสังเคราะห์ด้วยแสงลดลง การสร้างออกซิเจนจากการสังเคราะห์ด้วยแสงก็ลดลงตามไปด้วย ทำให้ออกซิเจนถูกส่งมายังส่วนใต้ดินลดลง [5] ซึ่งออกซิเจนนี้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการป้องกันเนื้อเยื่อส่วนใต้ดินจากพิษของไฮโดรเจนซ้ลไฟด์ในตะกอน ทำให้หญ้าทะเลมีความเสี่ยงต่อความเสียหายจากพิษของไฮโดรเจนซัลไฟด์มากขึ้น
  5. หญ้าทะเลบางชนิดทนแดดได้น้อยลง เพราะกลไกการปกป้องตัวเองจากแสงแดดจัดนั้นถูกยับยั้งที่อุณหภูมิสูง 
  6. จากหลายๆข้อข้างต้น เมื่ออุณหภูมิสูงขึ้นมากๆ จะส่งผลต่อเนืองให้หญ้าทะเลมีการเจริญเติบโตลดลง หญ้าทะเลบางชนิดทิ้งใบเร็วขึ้น หรืออาจตายได้ ขึ้นอยู่กับระดับของอุณหภูมิและระยะเวลาที่หญ้าทะเลต้องเจอกับความร้อน [2,3]

การที่เรารู้ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นได้บ้าง ทำให้เราสามารถวางแผนการติดตามและเฝ้าระวังได้ดีขึ้นนะคะ แต่ก็ยังมีอีกหลายประเด็น เช่น ถ้าอุณหภูมิค่อยๆเพิ่มสูงขึ้นช้าๆล่ะ หญ้าทะเลจะปรับตัวได้ไหม? ซึ่งเรายังต้องศึกษาเพิ่มกันต่อไปค่ะ

COCC hosts AI workshop to enhance academic and general work skills 💻💬

The Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center organized a hands-on workshop entitled “Using AI for Academic and General Work” on 19 July 2024. The workshop was designed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to support academic tasks and everyday work.

The workshop was open to students and interested participants, and was led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Phonchat Chotikarn and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suthinee Sinuthok, who served as invited speakers. The sessions covered fundamental concepts of AI, appropriate and responsible use of AI tools, and practical examples of AI applications in learning, research, data analysis, and general work.

This hands-on workshop provided opportunities for participants to engage in practical exercises, exchange ideas, and gain insights into the growing role of AI in enhancing work efficiency and academic performance in the digital era.

The Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center hopes that the knowledge gained from this workshop will be effectively applied in participants’ studies, research, and professional work in the future.

COCC is hosting special event in a week of World Ocean Day 2024 🌊🌎

“Coral Health and Restoration along Thai–Malaysia Peninsula” at Koh Tao

Our researcher, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen, organized a special seminar entitled “Coral Health and Restoration along Thai–Malaysia Peninsula” at Koh Tao, Surat Thani Province, in the Gulf of Thailand. The seminar was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join both on-site and online.

The seminar focused on sharing knowledge on coral reef health status, restoration approaches, and research findings from the Thai–Malaysia Peninsula, a region of high ecological importance in the marine environment. In addition, a Special Talk Session was organized to provide a platform for researchers from various institutions to exchange scientific information, field experiences, and research insights that can be practically applied to coral reef conservation and restoration efforts.

The Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center would like to express sincere appreciation to all participants of the “Coral Health and Restoration along Thai–Malaysia Peninsula” seminar, including representatives from university networks, government agencies, coral reef conservation teams from Koh Tao and other areas, as well as distinguished speakers who generously shared their expertise through both on-site and online sessions.

This seminar represents an important step in strengthening academic collaboration and marine conservation networks. The Research Center hopes to further develop partnerships with relevant stakeholders to ensure that scientific knowledge is effectively translated into practical applications, contributing to the sustainable restoration and conservation of coral reefs in the region.

Dr. Prakrit Noppradit, a researcher from Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center, Faculty of Environmental Management, Prince of Songkla University joined the SATREPS project to conduct research on Marine debris in the Gulf of Thailand from April 3-9, 2024 in the MV SEAFDEC2 ship. This research project collaborated with the Center of Ocean Plastics Studies, Kyushu University, Chulalongkorn University, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Pollution Control, and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

Underwater pinnacles resources in Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces

Underwater Pinnacles in Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces:

A Vital Resource Base for Marine Ecosystems

Underwater pinnacles located offshore of Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces are important marine resources that support the coastal ecosystems of the lower Gulf of Thailand. These areas provide habitats for coral reefs and a wide variety of marine organisms, serving as feeding grounds, shelters, and nursery areas for many species. However, in the past, scientific information to support effective management of these underwater pinnacles has been relatively limited.

To address this knowledge gap, the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC), in collaboration with local partner organizations—including Aomanao Khaotanyong National Park, Chumphon Marine National Park Operation Center 1, the Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (Lower Gulf of Thailand), and the School of Science, Walailak University—conducted a comprehensive survey of coral reef resources at underwater pinnacles. The outcomes of this work were compiled in a Thai-language technical report entitled “Coral Reef Resources at Underwater Pinnacles in Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces.”

This study assessed the biodiversity of coral species, reef fish communities, and other benthic organisms, as well as marine debris and key environmental parameters. The results indicate that most coral reefs in the study area are in good to very good condition, with a relatively high proportion of live coral cover compared to many other reef areas in the Gulf of Thailand. These findings highlight the ecological importance of underwater pinnacles as productive and biodiverse marine habitats.

Nevertheless, pressures from human activities were also observed, including marine debris, abandoned fishing gear, and localized coral damage, along with environmental factors that may affect the long-term sustainability of these ecosystems. The information generated by this study therefore provides essential baseline data to support conservation planning, marine resource management, and sustainable use of coral reef ecosystems in Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces.

Furthermore, the report contributes to the implementation of sustainable development goals related to marine and coastal resources (SDG 14) and helps raise awareness of the value of underwater pinnacles as critical marine habitats that provide long-term benefits to local communities, society, and the nation.

Coral Diversity at Losin Island, an Offshore Reef in the Gulf of Thailand: Toward a Future MPA

Speaking of the dive sites in Thai waters, “Losin Island”

Marine and Coastal Resources Institute (MACORIN), Faculty of Environmental Management (FEM) and Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC), Prince of Songkla University

It locates in the most southern Gulf of Thailand, would be one of the top dive sites for scuba divers. This is because of its beautiful and healthy reefs. Some marine endangered species, i.e., whale shark, manta ray, guitarfish, etc. are generally found in this area. In 2017, COCC researcher joined a coral reef survey with the specialists from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and Walailak University. The survey is under the Project on Marine Biodiversity of Losin Island Survey to prepare for the proposal to designate Losin Island to be a Thailand’s Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Losin Island consists of a reef area encompassing about 65,000 square meters and is associated with good water quality. The reef on the south and west sides had high live coral coverage about 80-90%. Dense Acropora communities at those sites included A. intermedia, A. grandis, A. hyacinthus, and several corymbose species. Some Montipora, Porites, and Pocillopora were found interspersed. Whereas, live corals at the east reef due to wave exposure showed lower percentage coverage about 40-50%. A total of 76 hard coral species were recorded in Losin Reef. Of those, as many as 26 species of Acropora species were found. Specially, we observed a rare species, Acropora longicyathus in this area.

The findings of this project were not only published in an international research journal but also used as supporting information for the establishment of conservation measures and the MPA designation of Losin Island, Panare District, Pattani Province. This process has been implemented by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment under the Act on the Promotion of Marine and Coastal Resources Management B.E. 2558 (2015).

Stress indicator for coral and zooxanthellae

The guideline is an output of the research project “Stress Indicator for Coral and Zooxanthellae at the Southern Reef of Phuket for Resistance to Coral Bleaching”, conducted through a collaboration between members of the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC) —Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sutinee Sinutok, Dr. Ponlachart Chotikarn, and Dr. Manasawan Saengsakda Pattaratumrong—and Dr. Lalita Putchim from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, with support from the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA).

The coral and zooxanthellae stress index is a tool used to assess coral stress and bleaching conditions based on seawater temperature and changes in the marine environment. It supports systematic monitoring and forecasting of coral bleaching risks associated with global warming and climate change.

Coral stress is evaluated when seawater temperatures exceed normal averages. Sustained temperature increases of approximately +1 to +3 degrees Celsius over several weeks can elevate bleaching risk, ranging from early warning levels to critical conditions that may lead to coral mortality.

The guideline also provides recommended response and management measures, including close temperature monitoring, reducing activities that disturb coral reefs during high-risk periods, managing water quality and sedimentation, and communicating coral bleaching information to the public and relevant stakeholders.

The coral stress index is therefore an important tool supporting coral reef conservation and promoting collaborative efforts to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of marine ecosystems. 🌊🐚

Ko Kham coral reef report

Ko Kham is located within the Khao Pa Chang–Laem Kham Non-Hunting Area in Thepha District, Songkhla Province. It is a coastal area of significant marine importance, particularly for its shallow coral reef ecosystems, which serve as habitats, nursery grounds, and feeding areas for a wide range of marine organisms.

The reef biodiversity survey at Ko Kham was conducted in August 2020 through a collaboration between the Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC), Chumphon Marine National Park Operation Center 1, and the Khao Pa Chang–Laem Kham Non-Hunting Area. The objective of the study was to establish baseline information on coral reef resources and marine biodiversity to support effective conservation and management of the area.

The survey results indicated that seawater quality around Ko Kham was within good condition and did not exceed environmental standards, despite the influence of freshwater input and sediment during the monsoon season. The coral reefs were classified as being in moderate to good condition, with higher reef health observed on the western side of the island compared to the eastern side. Live coral cover exceeded 50%, with dominant coral species including massive corals, flower corals, honeycomb corals, and ice-like textured corals.

In addition, a high diversity of marine life was recorded, including at least 14 species of reef fishes—among them indicator species reflecting reef health—and more than 10 species of large benthic invertebrates such as sponges, gorgonian sea fans, sea urchins, and nudibranchs. These findings indicate that the coral reef ecosystem at Ko Kham remains functional and ecologically healthy.

Based on the study, a technical report (in Thai) was produced to support marine conservation planning and management. Furthermore, public outreach materials were developed in the form of an educational poster entitled “Kham’s Underwater Garden” to disseminate knowledge and raise awareness among local communities and the general public about the value of coral reef resources.

At present, Ko Kham has become increasingly popular for marine-based tourism activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and beach recreation, with visitation expected to rise in the future. Although only minor impacts on coral reefs and marine debris were observed, inadequate management could lead to long-term degradation of these valuable resources.

The report therefore recommends the establishment of clear zoning and conservation measures, including the installation of mooring buoys, regulation of fishing activities in coral reef areas, visitor education, and continuous site management. These actions are essential to maintaining a balance between sustainable use and long-term conservation of marine resources.

The protection of Ko Kham’s coral reefs is not the responsibility of a single organization, but a shared commitment among all stakeholders, ensuring that this marine ecosystem continues to support local communities and remains a rich natural heritage for future generations.

On 1-3 September 2563, our researcher, Mathinee Yucharoen was invited from the PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) to observe the Losin Island, Pattani, Thailand. We and our networks from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Kasetsart University, Walailak University, and Phuket Rajabhat University have explored marine biodiversity in this coral reef, the most wonderful dive site in the Gulf of Thailand.

The grand opening of the “Ocean Warming” exhibition

The grand opening of the “Ocean Warming” exhibition was held by Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center (COCC),10 October 2019, at Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum, Prince of SongKla University (PSU). We are honored to have a Deputy Director for Science and Technology, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Suppasil Maneerat, to give the opening remark at this event. Together with a director of Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center, Lower Gulf of Thailand (MCRRDL); the board of directors from Marine and Coastal Resources Institute (MACORIN), Faculty of Science, Faculty of Environmental Management, Faculty of Natural Resources, and Faculty of Medical Technology, PSU; and Prof. Dr. Saowapa Angsupanich were attended the event.

There was a talk about climate change and the marine ecosystem in the global Scale, given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchana Chavanich (Deputy Managing Director of Chula Unisearch and professor at the Department of Marine Science, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University).

Another talk was about climate change in Thailand and the role of COCC in terms of being a leader in researching climate change impacts on coastal ecosystems. This topic was given by three of COCC’s researchers – Asst.Prof.Dr. Pimchanok Buapet (Faculty of Science, PSU, and a director of COCC); Dr. Sutinee Sinutok (Faculty of Environmental Management, PSU); Dr. Mathinee Yucharoen (Marine and Coastal Resources Institute,PSU).

At the end of the event, participants, as well as mass media, visited the “Ocean Warming” exhibition. The COCC tumbler, COCC Pinto (Thai traditional lunch box), and COCC postcards (created by Prof. Dr. Saowapa Angsupanich) were sold at the exhibition.

Launched the Marine Plastic Debris and Microplastics Campaign on Libong Island, Trang, Thailand

Marine Plastic Debris and Microplastics Campaign on Libong Island, Trang, Thailand was launched on 14 June 2019 at the multipurpose building of Batu Puteh school, Koh Libong Sub-district, Kantang District, Trang Province, Thailand. The recreation activity and lecture in this program were set up to raise awareness of plastic and microplastic pollution, including proposing the idea to mitigate such a problem. Our researchers, Asst.Prof.Dr. Siriporn Pradit (campaign director) and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Prawit Towatana (co-researcher), were participated in this campaign.

I started being interested in coral reefs because of the beauty of the oceans, then I fell in love with coral reefs.”

I never thought that I would fall in love with the ocean so much. Because the city where I come from is very far from the sea.

Even before I started doing the open water SCUBA diving course, I thought I never really know the ocean, and another thing that I never thought was that after doing the diving changed my life and all my goals.

I will never forget my first breath in the silent ocean, the moment I heard my own breath ever so clearly in the relaxing waters.

I realized that I was crazy right after my first plunge into the deep blue. I fell in love with the sea and I started to consider what I can do for my love.

The ocean is unselfish. It provides us fantastic scenery, limitless food, and also wonderful weird creatures that we cannot find on land. We get too much from the ocean. We do not only take from her but also hurt her at the same time. It is time to think about what we can do for the ocean.

I decided to learn more about the ocean and to do more to protect it. I am willing to protect her with my whole life. I go diving to visit the beauty of the ocean and also the damages of the ocean.

Every time, I see damaged corals, I think about their causes; if it is due to human activities or just the natural cycle of life. I started being interested in coral reefs because of the beauty of the ocean, then I fall in love with coral reefs.

Unquestionably, coral reefs are the most biodiverse places in the ocean. The reef ecosystem and creatures are mysterious to me. I have read papers, books and talked to others to get more knowledge, but I have to admit that I am still at the stage to prepare myself.

At the very least, I can understand we cannot avoid coastal development, but we can find the balance between development and protection. That’s why I am doing research in marine biology.

Will corals survive this summer?

With the temperature rising as before Songkran festival, someone might ask how hot the temperature would be in this world? The trend of elevating temperature has been certainly predicted. Everyone knows that our climate is changing and the air temperature is increasing, as it’s called, “global warming”

High temperature not only occurs on terrestrial ecosystems but it also happens to the ocean. The summer months are risk period for coral reefs that are highly sensitive to temperature change, leading to coral bleaching. When we see bleached corals (healthy corals are usually colorful), they are a result of the loss of the zooxanthellae, living in their tissues. These microscopic algae provide energy for coral via photosynthesis process. The bleaching is weakening of corals, due to the lack of food from zooxanthellae, and it may be subjected to mortality when corals are exposed for a long period to high temperatures

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration U.S. Department of Commerce) has reported the recent sea surface temperature anomaly during this April, which was 1 – 1.5 °C higher than average. Similarly, seawater temperature in Panwa Cape, Phuket (Figure 1) was recorded at 3 – 5 m in depth and also increased since March which seems faster than last year (Phuket Marine Biological Center).

There was also an orange color status or “warning status” around the area of Thai Waters from NOAA Coral Reef Watch, recorded at 24 Apr 2019 (Figure 2). However, there is no report about serious coral bleaching in local areas among our marine scientific community. We found only reports about paled coral colonies or partially bleached coral colonies in some areas, i.e., Ka-loak Island, Chumphon, Thalu Island, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Racha Island, Phuket, Ao Phang Nga, and Kradan Island Trang, which commonly occurred during previous summer months (Figure 3 and 4)

Our corals are at risk of bleaching and dying. As we are living in this world and might be a consequence of global warming. We can easily help coral reefs by reducing all human impacts such as changing our behaviors which negatively affected our environments, and increasing our awareness. There are more opportunities of coral reef recovery when they are in good environmental condition; no destroying, touching, or treading, no garbage, no wastewater or no pollution. Hopefully, our coral reefs will survive through this summer and still be beautiful in Thai waters.

An interview with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchana Chavanich

On an issue of marine debris and microplastics

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchana Chavanich, a marine biologist and a professor at the Department of Marine Science, Chulalongkorn University, just had completed an investigation of marine plastic pollution with her team at the Arctic last year.

Are we harming the Arctic!? What we have thrown in the sea pollutes the place we rarely set foot on. The planet is more vulnerable than we think.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchana Chavanich is the leading member of the Thai research team that pioneers the study on the marine debris and microplastics. Her study in 2017 which reported an accumulation of microplastic in marine invertebrates has sparked research interest and raised public awareness about this issue in Thailand.

You are one of the pioneer researchers working on marine debris and microplastics in Thailand. How did you first become interested in this field?

As a scientist, I am constantly seeking new research topics. Back in 2014, my team and I became interested in tackling a problem of marine debris. At the time we found that despite a number of investigations of marine debris in Thailand, “microplastics”, the tiny unit of this plastic debris, remained understudied. So our question was “what is the status of microplastics contamination in Thai ocean?” and we have been working on this issue since then. Although nowadays the subject is very well acknowledged and largely attracts public attention, we started working on it simply because we were truly concerned that microplastics could potentially be a serious threat in the future.

You recently came back from the North Pole expedition and one of your tasks was to investigate microplastics pollution although that area has so few inhabitants.

Why did you choose to study microplastics over there?

When we had a chance to go to the Arctic, we had already been working on marine microplastics, so we decided to include this topic in addition to our plan to assess impacts of climate change. First, we assumed that marine debris problem should be scarce at higher latitudes and other scientists who shared the research expedition seemed to think so too. Surprisingly, we found larger deposition of coastal and marine debris on the islands at higher latitudes than on the ones at lower latitudes. Those we found were not large debris or garbage but mostly microplastics. This is extremely worrying because it means that the ocean current can sweep the plastic far away towards the polar region.

Marine microplastics is a serious problem as it is so widespread. There are reports of microplastics being found in water body, sediment and marine faunas.

Is it too late? What are the solutions?

It is still not too late. We may be slightly slow to react but it is better late than never.

The solution is to stay aware of the problem. Everything we do today may not have an immediate impact but we do know that microplastic have contaminated our marine ecosystem as well as the food chain. Although we cannot yet confirm that eating microplastic-contaminated food is harmful to our health, we cannot completely rule out its potential long-term effect on ourselves and our children. “Should we wait around until it became problematic? I don’t think so” We are a part of nature, for that reason, we need to change our habits that could potentially devastate nature. 

Let’s start by making small changes ourselves and set an example for others. As for now, we have seen a bunch of plastic garbage in the sea. We can start by reducing our plastic usage. Imagine if one person stops using one plastic bag every single day, that accounts for 365 plastic bags reduction in a year. If everyone does so, it would dramatically help reduce microplastics in the marine systems.

The 1st International Conference on Climate Change, Biodiversity, Food Security and Local Knowledge

Two students, Ms.Pablina Cadiz and Ms.Ha Thi Thu Hue and lecturer, Assist.Prof.Dr. Siriporn Pradit from the faculty of Marine and Coastal Resources Institute and Coastal Oceanography and Climate Change Research Center participated in the 1st International Conference on Climate Change, Biodiversity, Food Security and Local Knowledge at ArthaWachana Christian University, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The two students presented their papers entitled “Biomass Estimates and Species Diversity of Mangrove Forests in Trang, Thailand” and “Modelling and Prediction of Fish Catch Landing in Songkhla Lagoon, Thailand Using Artificial Neural network, Multiple Adaptive Regression Spline and K-Nearest neighbor models”. The said conference invited Dr. Siriporn Pradit to attend the meeting on the Regional Consortium for Coastal Resource Management (CRM) in Asia. The meeting highlighted the possible CRM collaboration among academic institutions in Southeast Asia. The consortium is organized by the United Board for Christian Higher Education-Asia
